Improving Partnerships with Family Members of ICU Patients:
The IMPACT Trial
There is a pressing need to improve the care of critically ill older patients. The population is aging. Technology is advancing. The result is that older, frailer and more complex patients are receiving increasingly invasive therapies late in life.Many patients will benefit from care provided in intensive care units (ICU), surviving illnesses once uniformly fatal. There is uncertainty about how to best apply technology to improve healthcare and health for critically ill older patients, balancing length of life with quality of life and compassionate end of life care.
Overall Objective: This study is intended to assess the feasibility of engaging families in multi-faceted nutritional strategies and multi-faceted decision-making support strategies with the aim to demonstrate that the tools and training provided to family members will increase their satisfaction with care and their ability to act as agents of best practice.
